Cultural Connections

Final Design

Project Ideation

I wanted to create a personal project that explored my identity and my connection to my family and culture through a cookbook that highlighted stories about the family members the recipes came from.

I started this project off with research, visiting a magazine shop filled with publications with interesting design styles and layouts. I was really interested in seeing how other designers related the theme of the publication to the layout and learning from their grid structure and hierarchy. This research helped me understand what I wanted my book to look like, how I wanted the images to be treated, how I wanted the grid to be used, and how clean and organized I felt the book should be.

This research also provided me with some amazing ideas on how I could present the information I had. I was really interested in making this book look organized and follow a clear structure. I also wanted to learn from other designers and see how they laid out recipes in a book, in a way that was easy for the viewer to follow and understand.

Page Layout Variations

These specboards show the different spread variations I had before settling on my final choice. I worked with a clean, simple and organized style and tried to present the information in an organized manner. I experimented with different grids, photograph treatment, colour palettes, and typefaces that represented my theme best. I wanted this book to have a nostalgic, warm feeling that showcases my love and appreciation for my family and the recipes they have shared with me.
