Final Design
Project Ideation
This project takes my original artwork and photographs of cats, along with well-known poems about cats and turns them into an art catalogue book. When creating this book, I wanted to incorporate the art mediums I liked and poems I found interesting. This is what led me to decide to make four booklets that wrap up into one.
This project was inspired by the many visually interesting art catalogue books (designed by people such as Irma Boom, Ludovic Balland, and Christian Lange) I viewed while researching for inspiration. I like visually interesting layouts, but I also wanted to focus on making my work look important by not being too expressive with the type. I learned from looking at these book designs that balance is important in a design and that the focus should be on the work.
Page Layout Variations

When designing the page layouts here, I worked on making the images more interesting. I tried playing with coloured pages and type placement. I liked designs that incorporated vertical type and enjoyed the idea of breaking up an image.
The problem I found with this design is that it was too chaotic. I felt like it was all over the place with no hierarchy. I wanted the art to be the most important part of this design. This is something that wouldn’t have happened if I had broken up the images and been more experimental with the type.
When designing the page layouts here, I started with experimenting with interesting layouts inspired by the layouts I saw in other book designs. I liked the big type and the use of columns in art catalogue books. I also really liked how the empty space looked.

Something that I wanted to improve upon in my design was making it look more professional and less expressive. This was important to me because I wanted to ensure that my work was the most important part of the design instead of the type.
